Community demographics

Separate from crime figures. ACS 2024 five-year estimates for a Census tract, where available.

ACS estimates have sampling uncertainty and may cover a broader area than the selected place. Demographics do not affect crime rankings. API availability and permissions may vary.

This product uses the Census Bureau Data API but is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau.

↗
Important distinction: city statistics vs. street-level conditions

U.S. cities do not all publish geocoded incident data. AreaWise will never present citywide averages as a neighborhood-specific safety score. Detailed local mapping will be added only where licensed, well-documented incident data supports it.

SIDE-BY-SIDE

Compare the numbers.

Put cities next to each other. We show reported crime rates and data years side by side, without a misleading universal 'safe/unsafe' label.

OFFICIAL PUBLIC REGISTRIES

Know what's on record.

Use the U.S. Department of Justice's national search across state, territory and participating tribal public sex offender registries. We link to the official source, not copied or unverified profiles.

♧OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT SOURCE

National Sex Offender Public Website

Look up public registry information by name or ZIP code. Some states also support an address-radius search. The official site will ask you to accept its terms before searching.

01

National search

The DOJ portal searches public registries across the United States. Search scope and accuracy vary by jurisdiction.

02

Radius availability varies

Not every state provides address-based geographic search. Use ZIP code or the state registry when a radius lookup is unavailable.

03

Separate from crime rankings

Registry counts are not directly comparable between states, so they will not be rolled into a universal crime or safety score.

ⓘ
Important context

Public registries are subject to registration laws, exclusions, reporting delays and jurisdiction-specific restrictions. A blank result does not establish that a location is safe. Information must not be used to threaten, harass or retaliate against anyone.

TRANSPARENCY FIRST

The story behind the data.

A reliable information app has to be upfront about what's measured, what isn't, and how recent each source is.

01

Where numbers come from

Nationwide source layers: OpenCrime processed FBI city and state figures for 2024 (CC0), plus a separately licensed 2025 city snapshot from HireSecurityNow (CC BY 4.0). The 2025 snapshot was generated July 8, 2026, before the FBI's final annual release on August 14, 2026. Neither publisher's processed rows have been independently reconciled with original agency reporting in AreaWise.

02

What rates mean

Rates are reported offenses per 100,000 residents in a year. Violent crime commonly covers murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crime categories depend on the source's specific methodology.

reported offenses ÷ population × 100,000
03

What isn't measured

Not all crimes are reported, and police agencies differ in participation, boundaries and methods. City data isn't neighborhood data; annual data isn't a live incident feed. Reporting gaps are not evidence of safety.

04

Rankings come later

We have intentionally withheld a universal 0–100 safety score until we can independently audit reporting completeness, reconcile jurisdiction boundaries and justify comparisons. Any future ranking will publish its exact formula and eligible comparison groups.

05

Privacy by design

Location is requested only when you tap My location. Saved cities are stored locally. A street-address lookup is sent to the U.S. Census Geocoder only when you search for an address.

06

Build status

This is a functioning research prototype, not yet an App Store release. Live incident alerts, nationwide street-level heat maps, route planning and automated local safety scores are not implemented. Official sex offender records are accessed through the DOJ registry rather than copied into this app.
